Preparing Concrete Bases for Resin Surfaces in Kent
Luxury Resin Driveways, Built to Last. Professional resin bound installations across Kent.
Why the Base Decides Everything
The resin layer on your driveway, patio or path is only 15 to 18mm thick. Every imperfection in the substrate beneath will telegraph through to the finished surface. Cracks widen, dips collect water and weak spots crumble. That is why concrete base preparation is the single most critical stage of any resin installation. Kent Resin Driveways invests the time and materials this stage demands, because a first-class base is the only route to a first-class finish.
We prepare concrete bases for homeowners in Bearsted, Loose, Coxheath, Marden, Headcorn and across the county. Whether you need a brand new slab poured or an existing one repaired and levelled, we have the equipment and know-how.
Consequences of Poor Preparation
Resin bound needs a rigid, flat, well-drained substrate. When that requirement is ignored, the problems are predictable:
- Surface cracking that mirrors faults in the concrete below
- Low spots where rainwater gathers and stains
- Edge separation where the resin lifts away from the perimeter
- Premature wear and localised surface breakdown
Spending properly on base preparation protects your entire investment and extends the serviceable life of the resin to 15 years or more.
New Concrete Bases
For new installations, we excavate to formation level, remove soft or organic material and lay compacted type 1 MOT aggregate as a sub base. A concrete slab is then poured to the specified thickness, reinforced with steel mesh where vehicle loading requires it. Falls are set using a laser level to ensure water moves away from buildings and towards drainage points.
On existing sites, we conduct a thorough structural survey. We tap for hollow spots, check crack patterns for signs of movement and verify that drainage falls are adequate. Hairline cracks are filled with flexible repair compounds. Larger defects may require saw-cutting and localised re-pouring. Surfaces that are too smooth receive a bonding primer to give the resin something to grip.
Drainage Falls and Level Control
We set a minimum gradient of 1 in 80 across every base. This gentle slope guides excess water away from your property without creating visible pooling. Although resin bound is permeable and absorbs the majority of rainfall, the concrete beneath must still channel surplus water to the right exit point, whether that is a soakaway, a channel drain or permeable ground.

Benefits of Concrete Base Preparation for Resin
How We Handle Concrete Base Preparation for Resin
Ground Survey
We examine the existing ground or concrete, measure levels and drainage gradients, and determine the preparation scope.
Excavation and Sub Base
The area is excavated to the correct formation depth and type 1 MOT aggregate is laid and compacted in layers.
Concrete Slab Pour
Concrete is poured to the required thickness with reinforcement mesh and laser-verified drainage falls.
Curing and Final Check
The slab cures, is inspected for flatness and level accuracy, and is signed off ready for the resin bound layer.

Concrete Base Preparation for Resin FAQs
Can resin be applied directly onto old concrete?
It depends on the condition. Stable, flat, crack-free concrete is suitable. Where issues exist, we repair or replace sections before the resin goes down.
What thickness of concrete is needed?
Driveways generally require 100mm to 150mm over a compacted sub base. Patios and paths typically need 75mm to 100mm.
How long must concrete cure before resin is laid?
Concrete reaches usable strength at around seven days and full design strength at 28 days. We schedule the resin application within that curing window.
Do you carry out the resin installation as well?
Yes. We manage the entire project — base preparation, resin bound application, edging and finishing — under one team.
